Chinking

Chinking is a flexible sealant applied between logs in a log home to prevent air, moisture, insects, and debris from entering the gaps. It also helps improve energy efficiency and preserves the structural integrity of the home
Quality chinking can last 20–30 years with proper installation and care. However, it should be inspected every few years for cracks, separation, or wear, especially in harsh climates, and touched up as needed.
Minor cracks or gaps in existing chinking can often be repaired by applying fresh chinking over the problem areas. If the chinking is failing throughout or separating from the logs, removal and full replacement may be necessary.
Mortar-style chinking is rigid and prone to cracking with log movement, while modern synthetic chinking is flexible and designed to move with the natural expansion and contraction of logs. Most professionals now use synthetic chinking for durability and performance.
While small repairs might be DIY-friendly with the right tools and sealants, full chinking jobs require knowledge of log construction, proper surface prep, backer rod installation, and technique. Hiring a professional ensures long-lasting results and preserves your investment.
